Last weekend, from June 16th to 18th, Poznan hosted Pyrkon 2023, the largest fan convention in Europe, which celebrated popular culture beyond science. This three-day event brought together enthusiasts of fantasy literature, gaming, movies, board games, cosplay, comics, and more. It provided a haven for collectors and shopaholics, offering unique handicrafts and sought-after collector’s items. Pyrkon 2023 also emphasized inclusivity, social issues, and diversity, creating a magical atmosphere where attendees could truly immerse themselves and experience the power of passion and creativity in connecting people and inspiring new adventures.

It was a true pleasure to meet dr Tomasz Rożek, a physicist but also a journalist and a passionate advocate and promoter of science in Poland. He is the founder of the foundation “Nauka. To Lubię.“. Through this foundation, he actively promotes and supports scientific education, fostering a love for science among the general public. His efforts have had a significant impact in making science accessible and engaging for people of all ages in Poland. We also met fellows from Adam Mickiewicz University “Fantastyczny UAM” and scientists from the Research Group of Prof. UAM dr hab. Jakub Rybka.

Overall, Pyrkon 2023 was an immersive and inclusive convention that celebrated the power of popular culture. It provided a platform for individuals to come together, share their enthusiasm, and discover new aspects of their favourite fandoms. By emphasizing that not only science matters, Pyrkon 2023 encouraged its participants to recognize and appreciate the value of all forms of passion and creativity.

We are meeting next year in June 😉
